23/04/2009 - Chairman of the Revenue Commissioners, Josephine Feehily, today stated that they would commence "whole street" visits to businesses whereby they will arrive in a town or city and go into every cash business on a particular street and ask to see their books and records and cash registers. This is a worrying move by Revenue for the small business owner who may not even keep their books and records on the business premises. She also stated that they would be visiting construction sites whilst construction was ongoing to inspect the books and records. Both moves are an effort to ward off a "black economy" and tax evasion by business owners desperate to keep their businesses afloat. This move will place further stress and anxiety on small and medium sized business owners, the majority of which are wholly compliant, as they wait for the tax man to come through the door. Staff will have to be educated as to what to say and what rights the Revenue Commissioners have particularly when the business owner is not on the premises. Call us today for further advice and information. |
